The “Rule of 72” is a simple mathematically formula helping you to understand time and returns.
Number of Periods for doubling = 72 DIVIDED “Percentage per period”
or rewritten to the formulas second form
Percentage per period = 72 DIVIDED “NO. of Periods for doubling”
How do you use the formula?
If you want to find out how many year (periods) it will take your money to double placing them a 4.5% in the bank you will use the first version of the formula. Take 72 and divide it by the 4.5% you get in interest. Your money will double in 16 Years.
If you want to find which interest rate you need to double your money in just 5 years, you will use the second version of the formula. Take 72 and divide it by the number of years you want the money to double in, e.g. 72 divided by 5 and you get 14.4%. That is the interest your investments will need to produce to double in 5 years. (Notice this calculation of the percentage is very rough)
